New Wimpy falls into the Clapham-trap

Wimpy's PR firm announces launch of smart new style restaurant
....but locates it in the wrong town!

News reaches us from our eyes and ears on the Battersea Street that the very smart new-look Wimpy restaurant on Lavender Hill is being launched with a fanfare at an official opening on 12th January 2010.

The new look certainly looks great, but the problem is that Tangerine PR are trumpeting the restaurant's location in Clapham...more than a mile away, not realising that it is on Battersea's most famous road - Lavender Hill.

The SW11tch Campaign team are writing to Wimpy and Tangerine in the hope that the error can be rectified in the time that it takes to cook a juicy Wimpy quarterpound burger!

Excerpts from the press release read:

Wimpy, the well-loved and original British burger restaurant, will be celebrating the official opening of its newest restaurant, on Lavender Hill in Clapham on Tuesday 12th January.
The restaurant will officially be opened by franchisee Odile Ham, with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The new restaurant is the first venture into the Wimpy franchise for Odile which she will be running with her son Michael, the new restaurant manager.
............Odile, commented: “I grew up in South Africa where Wimpy is a very popular and well loved brand noted for its fantastic family values ..........I am really excited to have been given the opportunity to introduce Wimpy to the Clapham area.
“Lavender Hill is a thriving, family orientated community and it’s fantastic to now be a part of it. The opening day is promising to be a fun packed event and my staff and I are looking forward to welcoming all our new customers though the doors to dine in the restaurant.

............Clapham is only the 15th restaurant in the UK to pioneer the new Wimpy look.

Customers are invited to join Odile and the team at the new look restaurant at 313, Lavender Hill on Tuesday 12th January from 9.00am.

They are right to say that Lavender Hill is a thriving family orientated community - it is also much loved by the people of Battersea and became world famous in its own right, courtesy of the film The Lavender Street Mob. So we sincerely wish Odile and Michael Ham every good fortune with their new enterprise and very much hope that we will be able to welcome them into the Battersea family.

A look at the Wimpy store locator (see picture below) reveals that it has NO restaurants in Battersea, which includes the entire SW11 postal area....but it does at least mention Clapham Junction rather than Clapham. This shows that Wimpy has been sadly let down by its PR firm and suggests Wimpy itself know where they are - this is confirmed by the address provided on their websiteWimpy Clapham Junction - 313 Lavender Hill, CLAPHAM JUNCTION, London SW11 1LN

We'll keep you posted on news and will certainly profile Wimpy again in event of them SW11tching Back to Battersea.

Maybe the PR firm that made the mistake were dreaming about the Beetles mythical Tangerine Trees and Marmalade Skies at the time and mixed up their Lavender Hills in the process...

We think Tangerine owe Wimpy and Battersea a nice apology, and we are very hopeful they will offer one.
